Board Certification
and Fellowships
Dr. Maguire is Board certified in both the United States and Canada
i.e. a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate
of the American Board of Endodontics
Royal College of
Dentists of Canada The Royal College of Dentists of Canada was established by an Act of
the Federal Government of Canada in 1965 to promote high standards of
specialization in the dental profession and to recognize properly trained
dental specialists. This is accomplished through examinations created
specifically for each dental specialty. Successful completion of the
RCDC specialty examination may lead to Fellowship in the College and
the use of the designation FRCD(C).
The examinations of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada are used
by many provincial dental regulatory authorities as part of the requirement
for licensure as a specialist. Those seeking licensure as a dental specialist
should obtain information from the dental regulatory authority in the
province in which they intend to practice.
Objects of the Royal College
of Dentists of Canada (from the Act of Incorporation, 1965)
- to promote high standards of specialization in the dental profession;
- to set up qualifications for and provide for the recognition and designation
of properly trained dental specialists;
- to encourage the establishment of training programs in the dental
specialties in Canadian schools; and
- to provide for the recognition and designation of dentists who possess
special qualifications in areas not recognized as specialties.
American
Board of Endodontics
The American Association of Endodontists sponsors the American Board
of Endodontics (ABE). Founded in 1964, the American Board of Endodontics
is the only certifying board for the specialty of endodontics and is
recognized by the American Dental Association.
ABE Diplomate status is awarded to qualified candidates who have demonstrated
diagnostic skill, clinical proficiency, and professional judgment of
a level that ensures the highest quality of care for patients. They have
taken an examination administered by a panel of experts of their peers
and have demonstrated an exemplary level of knowledge, understanding,
and clinical expertise in endodontics.
Diplomates are permitted to use
the following designation, "Diplomate,
American Board of Endodontics" or "Board Certified in Endodontics" The ABE requires Diplomates to adhere to the American Dental Association
Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct.
Board certification requires successful completion of three examinations:
- Written Examination: A one-day examination that tests a broad range
of knowledge in anatomy, biochemistry, pathology, immunology, microbiology,
pharmacology, radiology, statistics, clinical endodontics, and related
disciplines.
- Case History Examination: Presentation of a diverse range of complex
cases from the applicant's own practice that demonstrate exceptional
knowledge, skills, and expertise in the full scope of the field of
endodontics.
- Oral Examination: The Candidate is required to demonstrate a high
level of skill in endodontic diagnosis, evaluation, analysis, creativity,
decision-making and problem solving.
Upon successful completion of all three examinations the endodontist
is certified as a "Diplomate of The American Board of Endodontics".
Certification as a Diplomate signifies a unique achievement. As of June
1, 2001 , there are only 1143 endodontists who have achieved Diplomate
status
